This family beach is convenient for big groups and parties. The popular, large sandy shores can be accessed off of Ocean Blvd. and Goldenrod Ave. There is a paid parking lot at the beach and metered parking on the bluff ($6 dollars per vehicle). If you do not want to pay for parking, you can park along the residential area, at Inspiration Point and walk down the path to the beach.
The variety of beach facilities and easy access make this place great for easy fun in the sun. The beach facilities include; picnic tables, volleyball nets, outdoor showers, restrooms, dressing rooms, food and equipment concessions, BBQ pits and lifeguard service (only on weekends during the winter).
There is a half-mile long sandy beach which is in the shape of a crown, hence the Spanish name Corona Del Mar or Crown of the Sea. The beach is surrounded by towering cliffs nd a rock jetty that forms the east entrance to Newport Harbor. The rock jetty area can be sed by surfers. In the past Corona del Mar was the place to be for surfing, with smooth slow rollers giving long rides across the harbor entrance sand bars. But the construction of the east jetty destroyed the good surf.
In the past, Corona del Mar beach not only was the home front of the mainland’s first surf organization, The Corona del Mar Surfboard Club, but also attracted many surf legends. Today there has to be a pretty big swell in order to be surf worthy, which can usually occur during the winter months.
The small waves do not seem to keep the water activity to a minimum. Most people break out the boogie and skim boards, as the conditions seem to be more suitable for these two sports. Swimming, sailing or even kayaking can also be great past times at Corona del Mar beach.
Corona del Mar beach maintains a “safe swim area" along nearly the entire stretch of the beach. The lifeguards will not allow scuba divers access to the water with their gear at anytime when they are present. But just south of the beach is Inspiration Point, where there is easy ocean access and it is permissible to dive.
Corona del Mar is a quaint beach town close to Newport, which attracts numerous tourists during the summer. The sunny days and warm water temperatures attract scores of vacationers to Southern California beaches. If you do not mind the crowds and searching for a place to set up along the beach, you can soak up the sun with your family or friends and enjoy the beach at its best time of the year, in the summer.
