The palace that hides Arab baths
Under this palace, built in the 16th century, are hidden some 10th-century Arab baths. These baths were declared a National Monument in 1917. They are called the Ali baths and are considered the most important in the city. They were an important place for personal hygiene, but also for social life. They were structured with 4 different rooms: the marble lobby with red and white arches, then the cold room and the warm and hot rooms. There were boilers adjoining the hot room which passed on their heat through a system of hot air ducts arranged between the walls of the rooms. The floor of the room was formed by small brick pillars between which steam and hot air circulated. 3 rooms of the palace are preserved. Today it houses the headquarters of the International Museum of Naïf Art and the Museum of Popular Art and Customs. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931.
