Collection from your hotel starts at 4:45 am to drive for about 3 hours to Mollepata where we take a break for breakfast. As soon as we are done we reinitiate in our van towards Marcokasa or head trail. At this place the cook and the horseman will pack all the camping equipment and cooking stuff and we start hiking the first 2 hours will be a little bit uphill to get to lookout point where we will have our snacks with panoramic views of beautiful snow-capped mountains (Humantay; 4120m and Salkantay; 6272m) later after one hour walking we get to Challacancha lunch spot, shortly after we continue hiking towards Soraypampa, our first Salkantay camping spot (3800 m; the highest and coldest campsite of the trip) we will be very close to the second highest snowcapped mountain of Cusco region.
Day 2 Soraypampa / Wayraq Machay / Collpapampa
After our delicious breakfast we start trekking at about 6:00 am, since this day will be the longest and the first 4 hours are uphill to get the highest point of the Salkantay Trek (4650m) located at almost halfway between 2 huge mountains; Salkantay on the right and Umantay on the left. From the pass, the views of the 2 snow-capped mountains are incredible. You are more likely to see a snow avalanche here while you are having your snacks. After a rest, we continue our leisure walk (downhill) through a terrific cloud forest towards Huayraq Machay, where we have lunch. After lunch we head to the beginning of the jungle area in order to reach our second Salkantay camping spot of Collpapampa (3000m).
Day 3 Collpapampa / La Playa / Santa Teresa
Shortly After having breakfast and tipping our horseman, we start walking through the jungle cloud forest crossing the Lluskamayo River and many other little brooks to reach La Playa after 6 hours walk. This section is very special because we pass through valleys and have wonderful views of waterfalls, tropical fruits, plants and not long after this we get to la playa lunch spot, after lunch we take a local bus to drive one hour to get to Santa Teresa (1500m) where we spent the third night surrounded by tropical trees. After some rest, you can go to the hot springs and enjoy the well-deserved soothing water, then at agreed time our cook will serve delicious tasty dinner.
Day 4 Santa Teresa / Hydroelectric / Aguas Calientes
Today after breakfast, we leave our camping spot of Santa Teresa to begin our hike towards hydroelectric station or lunch spot. We continue walking, passing a variety of crop plantations, coca, banana etc. To reach the hydroelectric station where we lunch and after that we keep walking for about two and half hours along the railway tracks to reach Aguas Calientes town where we spend the night in a hostel.
You can alternatively go to the thermal springs in the town (entrance fee 10 soles) a real treat after finishing the Salkantay Trek.
Day 5 Aguas Calientes / Machu Picchu / Cusco
After arduous 4 days we will finally know Machu Picchu. We wake up pretty early in the morning at about 4:30 am to then have breakfast and leave to walk up to Machu Picchu which takes one and half hours up to Machu Picchu, however, there is another option to catch the first bus which leaves 5:30 to Machu Picchu (25-minutes long) in order to see the sun rise and take classic photos of Machu, our licensed tourist guide will share his knowledge during the walking tour in the site (approx. 2 hours) after this you can explore the Incan Mysterious city by yourselves. If you still have some energy you can also consider going to the Inca Bridge or Sun gate!!! Remember after enjoying Machu Picchu, you have to go down to Aguas Calientes whether by bus or walking to take the train back to Ollanta, then bus or taxi to Cusco.
