Shigatse prefecture corresponds roughly to the historic Tsang region and is located in the south-western part of the tibet Autonomous Region. Before liberation it was an important administration region called, Tsangyul, and it was ruled by the successive Panchen Lamas. The administration center is Shigatse city and today it is the biggest prefecture in TAR in terms of population. There are 18 counties and around half of the areas are nomadic. On the southern side it borders with Bhutan, Sikkim and Nepal. The world’s highest mountain Jomolangma, or Mt. Everest, is also located in Tingri county of this prefecture along with several other 8,000 meter mountain peaks.
