Day 1: Swaziland
Departing early from Johannesburg, we head towards the incredible Lubombo mountains, to overnight either in Hlane Royal National Park, or Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary.
Encompassing an area of 22,000 hectares, Hlane Royal National Park is home to lion, elephant, white rhino, giraffe and many other species; including the most concentrated population of nesting white backed vultures in Africa. The word Hlane means “wilderness” in the local language siSwati, and the rugged natural surrounds are beautiful and unique.
Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is Swaziland’s pioneer conservation area. Once a farm, Mlilwane was proclaimed as a reserve in 1961. Although it is modestly sized at 4,560 hectares, it is Swaziland’s most popular eco-destination for its outstanding diversity of species, which can be enjoyed in safety because of the relative lack of predators within the sanctuary.
You have the option today of a sunset game drive at Hlane or Mlilwane, dependent on place of stay.
