Mirissa Moorings (MM) was created end 2012 at the initiative of the Building A Future Foundation for employment creation for youth from low income families on the southern coast of Sri Lanka in the ECO-Tourism industry.
The Building A Future Foundation was established in Sri Lanka in 2006 to provide a better future to underprivileged youth from areas devastated by the tsunami of December 2004. The Foundation is a non-profit organisation which aims at improving the living conditions of disadvantaged population depending on the resources of the ocean through capacity building, empowerment and economic self-sufficiency with an environmental, social and sustainable approach (www.baflk.org).
Early 2013, the Building A Future Foundation has trained about 245 underprivileged youth from the region into sectors that have a potential of economic development in this coastal region: boat building, sail making, mast making, mechanical and electrical engineering and for each category basic book keeping, small business management, marketing, internet and English.
The Building A Future Foundation in Sri Lanka identified the areas of training in a manner that they easily form interlocking value chains. In that way a sustainable market can be created and leverage is maximized. Mirissa Moorings is the 5th spinoffs initiated by BAF Foundation for job creation: 4 commercial spinoffs were created between 2006 and 2012 (Mirissa Water Sports, BAFF Polymech Pvt Ltd, Solar Impulse Pvt Ltd and the newly created MM) and one not for profit entity (Ruhunu Sailing Association). Each spin off generates sustainable employments to underprivileged youth from the region.
