Classic Peru & Machu Picchu 12 Days

This tour gives visitors an excellent overview of the country of Peru. We will start off in Lima the capital where we will visit the historical plaza de Armas and the ancient pyramid of Huaca Pucllana constructed over 1500 years ago. We will continue from Lima to Arequipa by flight. Arequipa is a beautiful city in the high desert and overshadowed b the giant volcan Misti (5856m/19101ft). In Arequipa we will visit the convent of Santa Catalina, Mirador El Carmen for great views of the city take a walk through the neighborhood of Yanahuara to see its cobblestone streets. Leaving Arequipa we will head towards Colca Canyon which is over 3000m/10000ft deep and one of the world's deepest canyons. We will visit the Condor Overlook which is on the very edge of the canyon and can watch the giant condors rising out of the canyon. Our next stop will be Lake Titicaca one of the world's highest navigable lakes where we will visit the floating islands of the Uros. The islands themselves are made out of bundles of Totora reeds collected by the Uru people. Continuing from Puno we will head to Cusco where we can tour the ruins of the Sacred Valley before taking the train to Aguas Calientes a small town in a deep river gorge below Machu Picchu. Our final stop will be Machu Picchu the world renowned city of the Incas. We will have most of the morning to explore this ancient city before taking the train back to Cusco where the tour will end.

Day 1: Arrival in Lima

We will pick you up at the airport when you arrive in Lima and take you to your hotel in the Miraflores district of Lima, which is centrally located and a good place to explore the city from.

Day 2: Lima City Tour

After breakfast we will begin our tour of Lima, a city rich in history and colonial architecture. Our first stop will be Huaca Pucllana an ancient pyramid constructed over 1500 years ago in the center of Lima. Our next stop will be the Plaza de Armas with its colonial architecture and grand cathedral. Out tour will finish off with a visit to the Santo Domingo Convent and monastery. The rest of the afternoon and evening is free to explore the city and for dinner.

Day 3: Lima to Arequipa

After breakfast we will pick you up from your hotel for your domestic flight to Arequipa. On arrival in Arequipa our team will be waiting at the airport to pick you up. Arequipa is a beautiful city in the high desert and overshadowed by the giant volcano Misti (5856m/19101ft). We will have a tour of the convent of Santa Catalina which was built in 1579 and a visit to the picturesque Church of the Society of Jesus. Our next stop will be to Mirador El Carmen for great views of the city and Misti in the background. Finally, we will take a walk through the neighborhood of Yanahuara to see its cobblestone streets and some of the old mansions before heading back to the hotel.

Day 4: Arequipa to Colca Canyon

Today we will head towards Colca Canyon which is over 3000m/10000ft deep and one of the world's deepest canyons. Enroute we will stop at Pampa Canahuas National Reserve where wild Vicunas can be observed before continuing to the town of Chachani set high in the Andes. In the afternoon we will continue to Chivay which is our base from which to visit Colca Canyon. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax.

Day 5: Colca Canyon

We will get an early start today and head towards the Condor Overlook (Mirador del Condor), which is on the very edge of the canyon. The views are amazing and condors can be seen rising out of the canyon on the thermal air currents. On the way back to Chivay we will pass through Pinchoyllo, Maca, & Yanque which are traditional Andean towns. We will return to Chivay in the afternoon.

Optional Tour: If you like we can organize a trip to the Le Calera Hot Springs for a small additional cost. These mineral rich springs maintain a temperature of 38C and offer a great soak.

Day 6: Colca to Puno

After breakfast we will leave the hotel at 10am and begin our drive towards Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca. We will make a brief stop at Patapampa (4900m/16075ft), the highest point on our journey so far, from where we will have excellent views of the volcanoes which include; Sabancaya, Ampato, Misti, and Chachani. We will reach Puno around 3:30pm and you can relax at your hotel and enjoy the views of the lake.

Day 7: Lake Titicaca : Uros Floating Islands

Lake Titicaca lies in the high desert of the antiplano and at 3200m/12500ft is one of the world's largest high altitude lakes. It is said to be the birthplace of the Incas and has a rich cultural history. After breakfast we will pick you up from the hotel at 7am for a boat ride to the islands of Uros. The islands themselves are made out of bundles of Totora reeds collected by the Uru people. We will then continue by boat to the island of Taquile where we can tour the island for several hours and enjoy an Andean style lunch buffet. In the afternoon you will have some free time to explore the island on your own before heading back to Puno for the evening.

Day 8: Puno to Cusco

We will start early today on the bus for Cusco which is about 10hour drive and along the way will make four stops where you will enjoy a guided tour at each. Stops include:
  • Pukara: This is the most important and oldest ceremonial center of the altiplano.
  • La Raya: This is the halfway point to Cusco and offers stunning views of the altiplano. Sightings of llamas, alpaca and vicuna are common.
  • Raqchi (Wiracocha God Temple): This was an Inca church of monumental dimensions.
  • Andahuaylillas: This is the Sistine chapel of South America: this church is one of the most beautiful examples of Andean popular religious art.

Day 9: Cusco City Tour

After breakfast we will go for a tour of Cusco. Your tour will include a visit to Santo Domingo Church which is built on top of the Coricancha one of the most important temples of the Inca Empire. Our next stop is the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, noted for its impressive stone walls. We will continue to the Tambomachay Archeological Complex on the outskirts of the city and is known as the bath of the Incas. After exploring the ruins we will return to Cusco for the night.

Day 10: Cusco - Sacred Valley Tour to Aguas Calientes

Today we will tour the famous Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our first stop will be to Pisac with its lively handicraft market and hilltop citadel. Next we head to Urubamba before continuing to Ollantaytambo a massive Inca Fortress with a huge sun temple and bathing complex. After visiting Ollantaytambo we will take the train to Aguas Calientes, a small town in a deep river gorge below Machu Picchu.

Day 11: Cusco to Aguas Calientes

We will get an early start today for the short bus ride up to the ruins of Machu Picchu. Your guide will give you a tour of the city and then you will have another couple of hours to explore on your own. Once your finished you will meet your guide in Aguas Calientes for journey back to Cusco by train and bus.

Optional Tour: Wayna Picchu is the mountain directly behind Machu Picchu and is frequently climbed for great views of the mountains. This requires a pre-arranged permit which can be obtained for additional cost. Please ask us if you would like to include the optional hike in the package.

Day 12: Depart Cusco

Take breakfast at the hotel and we will drop you to the airport for your flight back to Lima.
