To the North of Latvia lies Estonia and “middle” Latvia opens out before you in a patchwork of legends, castles, cities and rivers that hold the key to history in this area. Lush and green (much like the rest of Latvia) this is the heartland of what forms the Latvian identity and the wellspring that created the modern nation state of Latvia. Educated and artistic thinkers shaped the legacy left by each retreating regime to form a true Latvian spirit.
Here the landscape follows the golden mean of composition, perfectly rolling hills, strong verticals and dramatic skies. This is where the great Latvian master Purvitis painted not summer, but the melting snows of early spring. If you see men in tall hats, you are in Piebalga and this is as good as it gets!
