Tsuruoka is a city located in the Shonai region of Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Tsuruoka is the second largest city in Yamagata Prefecture after Yamagata City. After the neighboring towns of Fujishima, Atsumi, Asahi, Kushibiki and Haguro merged into Tsuruoka in October 2005, the city's total area came to 1,311.51Square kilometers. The city is located on the coast of Yamagata Prefecture bordering the Sea of Japan and has some locally popular beaches such as Yunohama and Sanze. The city was founded on October 1, 1924 becoming Japan's 100th city.
