Awaji is a city located on Awaji Island in Hygo Prefecture, Japan. Awaji City was founded on 1 April 2005 from the merger of the former town of Awaji with the towns of Tsuna, Higashiura, Hokudan, Ichinomiya, all in Tsuna District. As of 2008, the city has an estimated population of 49,812 and a density of 281.16 persons per Square kilometer. The total area is 184.05Square kilometers. Notable local places to visit are Awaji Yumebutai (Kiseki No Hoshi Greenhouse), Nojima Fault (the focus of the Great Hanshin Earthquake), Akashi Kaikyo National Government Park, Honpuku-ji Temple and Awaji World Park Onokoro.
