Tezu is the only place in Arunachal Pradesh having a small airport but with a very erratic service mostly serving the V.I.P government officials visiting this land. Tezu town is the headquarters of the Lohit District of this state and an ancient inhabitation of this land of valley and rivers belonging to the Mishmi Tribe. It is said that the first wife of Lord Krishna, ‘Rukmini’ happened to be a Mishmi damsel.
Road communication to this town is through Tinsukia and the nearest regular airport is at Mohanbari. Tezu has a sizable population of Tibetan community as well residing in a settlement locally called the Lama Camp. Settled here since the 1960s they have maintained their own custom and tradition, have built monasteries, health center, nursing home, schools and other infrastructure coming from the government and other funds. Tezu is a place full of ideal locations for trekking and hiking, river rafting and angling on the Lohit River.
Tezu also has a sizable population of Tibetan community of about 2000 mostly residing in a settlement called by local name as Lama Camp, Tibetans settled here since 1960s after fleeing Chinese persecution in their homeland Tibet, till date they have maintained their own custom and tradition, they have built monasteries, health center, nursing home, schools etc.with fund coming from Govt and other funds.Lama Camp is located in Tindolong about 6 km (4 mi) from Tezu Bazaar and has 5 camps each camp represent different regions of Tibet mainly Kham kongpo and Pemako.
