Located within the Chilika Lake in Odisha state along the eastern coast of India, Nalaban Island is a notified bird sanctuary protected by the Wildlife Act. A bio-diversity hotspot, many of the bird species found here are vulnerable, rare & endangered, & listed in IUCN Red List. Over 225 number of fish species alongside a variety of algae, phytoplankton & aquatic plants have been discovered in this region.
Chilika Lake is a designated 'Ramsar Site'. This wetland of international repute is now identified for conservation & management of the Government Of India Ministry of Environment & Forests - National Wetland Coral Reefs Committee. A survey of fauna in & around Chilika Lake recorded more than 800 species in this region
