English Alive Academy’s mission is to offer free or high quality education to disadvantaged pupils in Nazret, Ethiopia.
English Alive Academy is housed in three converted houses in the town of Nazret. With dirt roads outside the school, thronged with cattle, donkeys and camels, English Alive Academy is a World apart, with brightly painted walls, furniture, and pupils’ work proudly hanging.
With a computer room, libraries and learning support area, English Alive is able to offer more than the basic curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to discuss, create, experiment, explore, and emerge at the end of the day from English Alive a more empathetic, creative, well-rounded person.
We operate a native speaker volunteer programme, designed to teach English to pupils and teachers and to model current educational methods. To date, we have had 36 volunteers from locations such as the UK, USA and Australia.
WHY ARE WE DIFFERENT ?
Before English Alive Academy opened, the children we support would either go to one of the local Government schools, or if this was not possible, they would not be able to attend school at all.
The advantages of English Alive Academy are numerous.
Smaller class sizes: Around 25 students per class rather than over 100 students in a typical class in a government school in Ethiopia.
Sponsored children attend the school completely free:
There is no provision in other schools for scholarships of any kind in Nazret.
A library that houses a range of fiction and reference books:
Most schools have no other teaching resources other than chalk and a rare textbook.
Fully resourced with educational materials including art supplies . Other schools have no educational supplies for the pupils to work with and provide no art supplies.
Positive reinforcement is encouraged: At English Alive Academy, corporal punishment is prohibited.
Creativity and critical thinking are nurtured in our students and staff
All of our teachers receive comprehensive in staff training:
A subsidized school bus service: That brings the children to school. We are the only bus service that offers a service to pupils from surrounding villages.
WHY WE NEED SUPPORT:
English Alive Academy grows each and every year, expanding from three classes at its start to fifteen classes in 2013, with this trend being expected to continue.
With each new child that enters the school there is a massive amount of infrastructure that has to be put into place so that they can be officially enrolled at the school. Child sponsorship helps to cover the running costs of the school such as salaries, stationary, electricity, water, textbooks and uniforms. However, with every class of new sponsored children come infrastructure costs that outside donations are sought to cover items such as new desks, chairs, bus, playground, computers, a teacher, an assistant, another cleaner etc. It is a wonderful headache to have but it takes a lot of money and time to prepare for a new class of students.
Upgrading the school curriculum with aspects such as regular computer classes has been a worthwhile, but expensive project. The students will leave school having an important skill, which will greatly increase their employment opportunities.
Donations help us pay for art supplies, tape machines and physical education equipment so that pupils can develop their creative side.
