Description
Development of the ROC tourism industry at the government
level began in 1956. In September of 1960, with the approval of the Executive
Yuan, a Committee of Tourism was set up within the Ministry of Transportation
and Communications; in October of 1966, this Committee was reorganized as the
Tourism Council. Finally, on Dec. 29, 1972, the Tourism Bureau has been
established under the Ministry of Transportation & Communications and
responsible for the administration of domestic and international tourism policy
making, execution and development.

TAIPEI—Taiwan has opened a tourism office in Beijing, the
island's first official presence in China's capital since the two sides split
amid civil war in 1949, in the latest sign of improving ties between the
historical rivals.
Following an agreement reached in 2008, the Taiwan Strait Tourism Association, a
semi-official organization, unveiled its new office on Tuesday, with China
scheduled to open a tourism office in Taipei on Friday. The offices aren't
authorized to issue tourism visas.
