El Yunque Rain Forest, formerly known as the Caribbean National Forest, is situated 40 km southeast of San Juan. The El Yunque in Puerto Rico is a cool, mountainous, sub tropical rainforest, with jagged topography and plentiful diverse vegetation. This 28,000 acre of tropical forest is the only forest in the United States National Forest System, offering varied species of exotic flora and fauna.

This forest is a birdwatchers paradise, containing some of the rare bird species including the Puerto Rican Parrot, which habitats in the upper zones of the Luquillo Mountains. Also this rainforest holds 11 species of bats, 50 species of birds, 8 species of lizards, and 13 species of coqui, several species of shrimp and fish and snakes.
