The origins of this building date back to the 12th century when it was a residence of the knights of the military order of Santiago who took part in the Christian conquest of the city. Some 15th century features still remain in the present-day building, and two of the courtyards and some of the rooms are in the Mudejar style.

The most attractive features are the arches, with five-foiled and ogee arches alternating with the normal semi-circular ones, which provide a marked contrast to the austere look of the rest of the building. Nowadays it is used as a school.
