Traditionally, the main localities of the island were connected by the so-called Camino REAL de La Costa y Medianías. The GR 130 is a path based on the old paths that connected the towns, used for short distances (half-day), as for longer distances it was preferible to climb up a radial route and, once at La Crestería, drop down along another radial path to the destination. With its 200 km in length, it covers the entire island in a circle of six stages, running through the main populations without any great slopes, except for the stretch from Garafía to Barlovento. The main roads now follow its line, parallel at times, others fossilising the the old path.By connecting the different stretches, it is possible to take the circular path that can be done in 6 or 9 days, although some areas are More interesting than others from the point of view of the landscape and the quality of the path. There are several stretches of the route that are being renovated little by little, either by recovering the old path, refurbishing the cuts made by the road, or by seeking alternative routes.
