The sound of “Sigismund Bell” carries far and wide! This most famous of Polish bells can only be heard on solemn occasions. Here in the cathedral Polish kings were crowned and buried. Here also the famous bell was rung to celebrate the coronation of the king and to mourn his passing. Bishops of Krakόw, cardinals, Polish national heroes and poets are buried in the cathedral crypt. Side chapels have been added to the gothic cathedral, the most famous being the Sigismund Chapel regarded as “the pearl of the Florentine renaissance north of the Alps”. "Sigismund's Chapel" ("Kaplica Zygmuntowska") is one of the most notable pieces of architecture in Kraków. Inside the cathedral the altar with the reliquary of St Stanislaus, the royal tombs with their stone canopies and the Arras tapestries hanging over the nave are particularly noticeable.
