Nauru

Formerly known as the Pleasant Island, Nauru, the World’s smallest island country is spread over a small 21 square kilometer area. Predominantly inhabited by Micronesians and Polynesians, Nauru gained independence from Australia in 1968. Largely known for its phosphate reserves which are exported to Australia, South Korea and New Zealand, fishing is the other major activity contributing to the Nauru economy. Surrounded by coral reefs which are exposed at low-tide, there also are 16 channels which allow small boats access to the island.

One of the three phosphate rock islands within the Pacific Ocean, there are very few natural fresh water resources on Nauru Island. Except for a lagoon and few sandy beaches, tourists can indulge in various activities like scuba diving and deep sea fishing. Served by the Nauru International Airport, tourism however is not a major contributor to the Nauru economy, although this island nation has several tourist oriented facilities including a dedicated airline.
