Nouakchott International Airport is a public airport located near Nouakchott, the capital city of the North-West African nation of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. One of the largest cities in the Sahara region, Nouakchott is spread along the Atlantic coast of the Sahara Desert on the western coastline of the African continent. Nouakchott City is the administrative and economic centre of Mauritania, snugly sitting on one of the most valuable trade routes to West Africa, which was established as the capital city in 1960 when the country gained independence from the French occupation. The Nouakchott International Airport is located at a distance of 4 kilometers from the city centre, and serves as a hub for the Mauritania Airlines International, that was recently established and is based here. Situated at an elevation of 7 feet above mean sea level, this premier aviation facility of the country is owned and operated by the government of Mauritania. There is a 9,876 feet long asphalt surfaced runway catering to a variety of passenger and cargo flights, including many chartered services to/from the Nouakchott International Airport. A single passenger terminal with the requisite aviation infrastructure as per international norms and with most basic passenger convenience facilities, is ably serving the airlines and passengers utilizing the services offered at this airport. Private taxis and car rental services are readily available outside this airport enabling passengers opt for a cozy local travel downtown. Moreover, some hotels around the Nouakchott International Airport are also operating hotel shuttle services for the convenience of their guests seeking comfortable hotel accommodation options.
