Wignacourt Tower was built in 1610 during the reign of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, who also donated the funds for its construction. The Tower served as Malta’s northern-most defensive outpost until fort St. Agatha was built in Mellieha in 1649.

A Maltese heritage foundation restored the tower and opened it to the public in the 1970’s. Today, it serves as a small museum dedicated to Malta’s rich military-architectural heritage and houses the Island Fortress exhibition.
