Gao is a town in eastern Mali on the River Niger lying 320km (200mi) ESE of Timbuktu. Situated on the left bank of the river at the junction with the Tilemsi valley, it is the capital of the Gao Region .The population of Gao mostly speak Songhay but includes many ethnicities, including the Bozo (traditionally nomadic river dwellers), Fulfulde,Fulani cattle herders, and Tuareg nomads, as well as Bambara peoples from western Mali.
