Kuno-Palpur Wildlife Sanctuary

Kuno-Palpur Wildlife Sanctuary, with an area of 344.686 sq km, is located in the Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh, amidst the Vindhaya hill range, close to Rajasthan. The Kuno River which flows almost through the middle of the park is the main source of water for wild animals, since other riverbeds are seasonal. The wildlife in this region consists of spotted deer, Sambar, Barking deer, Nilgai, Chinkara, Wild dogs and leopards. There is very little evidence of tiger in the area. Kuno is rich in reptiles like the Indian monitor lizard, python, cobra, viper and krait. Various species of fish and Fresh water crocodiles are also found in the Kuno River.

The area has a rich avifauna with some migratory birds. The common birds include bayas, egrest, Saras cranes, vultures, hawks and eagles. Kuno has been selected as an alternate home for the endangered Asiatic lion, which is now confined only to the Gir National Park and Sanctuary of Gujarat. The area is a historical range of Asiatic lions. The Lion Reintroduction Project is a collaborative initiative between Government of India, state government and the Wildlife Institute of India.
