To the east of Raj Bhavan is the area popularly referred as Esplanade, which once stretched from Dharmatola Street to Chandpal Ghat. Today , it is loosely bounded by Esplanade Row East to the north, Red Road to the West, Rani Rashmoni Avenue to the South Chowringee to the east. This esplanade is located in the heart of the city and is one of the busiest portions. South West of the Esplanade is well-known statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, while a short walk further west leads to the Bidhan Sabha, or Assembly House, via the landmark Akashvani Bhavan, the office of All India Radio. Esplanade also crowns the Maidan. The vast expanse of land that was cleared to provide Fort William with a strategically open space around it. These lavish grounds have been kolkatas lungs, enjoyed by one and all through every season.
