The Charbagh Railway Station is the main railway station of Lucknow, situated in the south of the city. Its station code is LKO. Charbagh Railway Station was built in 1914 and incorporates the nest of Awadhi and Mughal architecture. The word 'Charbagh' means four gardens; it is said that four gardens were here at the time of Nawabs. From an aerial view the tombs and pillars of the Charbagh Railway Station appear to be players of a chess game and the whole station as a chess board, this is one of the unique features of this building and it makes the Charbagh Railway Station as one of the most beautifully built Railway Stations in the World. It serves as main station for both Northern Railway and North Eastern Railways.

It has two different stations- divisional headquarter of Northern Railway and also of NER and an important rail hub in North India. It is also the second busiest railway station of Uttar Pradesh after Kanpur Central. Trains from here connect the city to New Delhi and prominent state capitals of India like Bhopal, Patna, Jaipur, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jammu etc. Lucknow NR is also the main hub for the Lucknow-Kanpur Suburban Railway System (MEMU OR LC).
