It is a sunken garden laid out in the formal, Mughal style with water-courses, fountains, and water chutes called chadars or shawls: they are designed to make flowing water foam as they pour down. Water from the river just beyond the grounds of the palace was drawn up by animal-powered Persian wheels, filled into high reservoirs, and allowed to flow down into the gardens.
