According to the Department, the oldest building in Pachmarhi was the original Bison Lodge. They claim that in 1862, the Forest Department of the then Central Provinces, was started in a building known as Bison Lodge. The Department was founded in 1861 by Captains G.F Pearson and J. Forsyth. The original building had to be demolished and the present building, also called Bison Lodge, was constructed on the site of the earlier one.

Bison Lodge holds a small but reasonably interesting museum. As sightings of bison, leopards or tigers in the wild are unlikely during a short visit to this area, the dioramas of these animals in the museum should give visitors a fair idea of what they have missed. Moreover, since many of the listed attractions of Pachmarhi are within the protected forests guarded by the Forest Department, tickets for such entry must be bought here, and the obligatory services of a Forest Guide have to be booked in Bi¬son Lodge. Please remember, however, that though a single ticket permits en¬try to all the attractions in the forest, this is valid for only one day. Buy this ticket after you have planned out your itinerary.
