Tjörnes is a peninsula situated at the northeast of Iceland, between the fjords of Öxarfjörður and Skjálfandi. Tjörnes is known for its particularly dense population of Rock Ptarmigan and the rich fossil record of Miocene - Pliocene age. "Tjornes" is also a name for a submarine volcano nearby that erupted in 1868,as shown on the list of volcanoes in Iceland. The submarine volcano itself has a small elevation less than 500 feet tall and also less than 150 meters tall.
