Gljúfurárdalur is a vale west of Hellisheiði by Vopnafjörður. A hiking trail leads through it and a wiew point allows for a perfect view of the imposing waterfall Neðrifoss. A marked trail leads towards the ocean, where ruins from early settlement can be visited. The surroundings form a propicious natural harbor and vestiges of ancient fishing settlements - as well as the saga of the hero of days gone by, Þorsteinn uxafótur - lend historical importance to this scenic shore.
