Szolnok - on the bank of rivers In 2005 the county seat, situated in the heart of the Hungarian Great Plain, on the high ground at the junction of the Tisza and Zagyva rivers, celebrated the 930th anniversary of its foundation. Szolnok’s population of 76,000 makes it the eleventh most populous town of Hungary, an economic, cultural and medical centre.
The Tiszaliget (Tisza Grove), a well looked after park area, awaits visitors seeking relaxation with lido and bath built with thermal and cold water pools, as well as guest-houses, a motel, a campsite, a youth camp and two hotels. The Town Sports Hall, the sports hall of the college and the sports centre with several small and large grounds are also situated in the Tiszaliget. The Tisza Hotel and Thermal Bath on the bank of the Tisza was built in 1928 in the middle of what was formerly almost 5-hectares of park in the style of Versailles. Its thermal water is excellent for the cure of rheumatic and motoric diseases and the mitigation of stomach problems.
Arts and culture play increasingly important roles in Szolnok’s present and future objectives. The Artists’ Colony inaugurated in 1902 greets today painters, sculptors and visitors in a renewed form. However, beside its eminent fine art traditions, Szolnok’s most important genre these days is music. The county seat is famous for its music life and events that attract World famous musicians such as the Szolnok Music Festival, the Autumn Art Weeks and the Szolnok Jazz Festival.
