Kulusuk is the gateway to East Greenland and the little settlement is an excellent introduction to settlement life in the Ammassalik region. Kulusuk is situated on a small rocky island between jagged mountains and extensive fjords, and is almost always surrounded by icebergs and a glittering ice sea. Although tourism and the service industry are becoming more and more important, traditional hunting and fishing still remains a vital source of income for many families in the settlement. Previously, the island of Kulusuk was the most densely populated place in the Ammassalik region, because of the good fishing grounds and hunting opportunities. In 1930, there were 165 people in the settlement at Kulusuk, in comparison to just 112 in Tasiilaq. Today, 300 inhabitants make Kulusuk the region's second largest settlement after Kuummiut.

Excursions on the island of Kulusuk:

Besides being the gateway, the island also has a unique landscape that is ideal for short hikes. A trip that is recommended for all visitors goes to the top of Isikajia Mountain at just over 300 metres high. There is a fabulous view from there over the huge icebergs in the Denmark Strait and East Greenland's high mountains 100 km away.

How to get there:

Air Iceland flies to Kulusuk airport every day throughout the summer from Reykjavík, whilst Air Greenland offers an air service via Nuuk every Wednesday and Saturday. From Kulusuk it takes 10 minutes to fly the 23 kilometres (14 miles) by helicopter (Air Greenland) to the main town of Tasiilaq, which is situated on the island of Ammassalik.

How to get around:

In winter you can experience the settlement and its surroundings on dogsled, snowmobile or skis. Locally, the means of transport in winter are helicopter, snowmobile or dogsled and in summer transport takes place via supply ships to the settlements, helicopter and private boats.

Where to sleep:

In relation to its size, the settlement has a large hotel. You can also stay privately or camp anywhere in the countryside, where the view pleases you most.
