This largest lake of Ethiopia along with it’s 37 islands scattered along the surface feature several churches and monasteries with a history dating back to the 13th century. Lake Tana also is the source which literally gives birth to the Blue Nile after discharges flowing down the Tis Abbai Falls hydro-power station continue a long journey to Khartoum, and eventually empty into the Mediterranean Sea. One of the most pleasant destinations in Ethiopia, a variety of shore birds are found around Lake Tana, especially the Fasiledes Island which is an important wetland and a bird-lover’s delight.

Boats, which can be hired from Bahir Dar, is the best way of experiencing the beauty and a variety of habitats, including rocky crags, riverside forests and landscapes within and around Lake Tana. The archaeological research unearthed at Yeha, near Lake Tana showcases a historic treasure which includes a variety of animal figurines and Sabaean inscriptions.
