Aswan International Airport, which is also known as the Daraw Airport is located near Aswan City in the North African Arab Republic of Egypt. This public airport which served 864,000 passengers in 2008 is witnessing increased traffic by the day, and is owned and operated by the Government of Egypt. The city of Aswan which is a busy market place and a major tourist centre of the country is located on the eastern bank of the River Nile in this southern Egyptian region.
The modern city of Aswan has now expanded and included the formerly separate community on the Elephantine Island which also happens to be a picturesque and favorite tourist destination located within the River Nile. Aswan, as we know, is in fact an extension of the ancient city of Swenet, which in antiquity was the frontier town of ancient southern Egypt. It now beholds a host of Egyptian cultural relics including colossal statues, obelisks, monolith shrines, pyramids and lost cities, which are firmly etched on the Egyptian tourism map.
Situated at an altitude of 662 feet above mean sea level the Aswan International Airport is very well serving the requirements of tourists wanting to visit these destinations. It is having an 11,161 feet asphalt surfaced runway that has capably served over 11,000 flight movements each year connecting Aswan with the rest of the globe. The facilities at this airport are from basic to average, barely sufficient to meet the demands of the international passengers. Car hire and hotel pick-up shuttle services are available at this airport. There is no bus service for local transportation, however rates must be negotiated and fixed before-hand while engaging private taxis at the Aswan International Airport.
