Displaying a vast collection of 5000 ancient artistic, archaeological and religious artifacts along with the recent Cambodian art exhibited in the museum, National Museum features several sculptures made of sandstone from the Angkorian era. Designed by George Groslier and the Ecole des Arts Cambodgiens, this Phnom Penh museum which portrays the specialties of the ancient Khmer Art was originally built in 1917.

National Museum is housed within a terracotta-roofed Cambodian style structure, where a large number of Cambodian free tail bats have made their home in the roof. It's been years since these bats and subsequent generations have been living in this man made structure. Undertaking the work of protecting, displaying and promoting Cambodian’s artistic and cultural wealth, photography however is not allowed inside the National Museum.
