Darwins Enchanted Islands
Destination visited: Galapagos
Activities included: Birdwatching, Hiking/Trekking, Mountain Climbing, Scuba Diving, Walking, Whale Watching
During the last 2 weeks of August I traveled with my 13 yr old son and husband to the Galapagos Is, as well as spending some time in Quito, Ecuador
We flew into Quito, where we stayed for one evening, then flew into San Cristobal, where we met up with our motor yacht, Eric. We visited 7 different islands and the flew back to Quito, where we visited the highlands.
Swimming and snorkeling with the sealions and penguins was a definite highlight. Viewing a school of dolphins swimming along the side of our yacht was an extra bonus as well as seeing whales while travling from island to island. Definitely a must trip for naure lovers!
While the islands are located on the Equator, it was not as warm as I thought it would be. Avg. temp for Aug is 75-80 F, with occasional bouts of mist occruing during the morining hours, but never heavy rain. The water tmperature cold, therfore I would reccommend a wet suit while snorkeing. All in all the islands are truly enchanting and mystical, where animals are within arms reach of you and do not apper to be frightend.
Bring lots and lots of film and a cam recorder.
Temperature can be cool in the late summer, but dry. The warm, wet months are Mar through June. Humboldt current and El Nino affect the Islands.
Plenty of hiking and actitivites to be done,so one should be in reasonably good shape to take advantage of all the good things to do!
