Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
An ancient Maya homeland flanked by the Gulf of Mexico and the dazzling Caribbean Sea, the Yucatan Peninsula is a magic place. Its sparkling white beaches ring a rugged interior where dense jungles conceal a fairyland of trees, ferns, and blossoms.
Rising out of these jungles and above the beaches, the grand stone ruins of the Maya have been uncovered, renovated, and made tourist-friendly. These ancient relics harbor clues to the rise and fall of the great Maya civilization and provide insights into the lifestyle of today’s Maya; scattered around these archaeological zones and across the peninsula lie villages where descendants of the Yucatan’s early inhabitants create beautiful textiles and ceramics and carry on centuries-old traditions.
