Annaberg constitutes an important part of the pilgrimage route to Mariazell as well as being an autonomous place of pilgrimage in itself. Its landmark, the church of pilgrimage sanctified to St. Anna, was built in 1217 constituting a well-known place for rest and a place of prayer for pilgrims. The church of Annaberg, formerly called "Tannberg", and its gothic choir was Austria's first pilgrimage church sanctified to St. Anna.

The "Anna-Selbdritt" group, a very valuable gothic wood craft dating from 1440, can be found inside the church. It is said that it was made by Jakob Kaschauer. But also an imperial present dating from 1660 was attracting pilgrims: Holy Anna's brainpan was certainly a fake, but still a worshiped relic in the past. Members of the imperial family were often among the many pilgrims: even Maria Theresia and Franz I.Stephan pilgrimaged to Annaberg.
